I was kindly asked by Jeff Horseman at the Press-Enterprise to offer some thoughts on the incumbent’s insane position with respect to the epidemic of gun violence in the United States. The Representative seems to believe that a loss of religious faith and the playing of video games are somehow the reasons Americans are shooting one another, despite ample international and scholarly evidence against both. In addition, he thought dog-whistle racist references to Chicago and Los Angeles were appropriate, despite both areas experiencing very different kinds of violence. The incumbent chose to ignore the parts played by growing poverty, despair & hopelessness, a culture of celebrity, and overly-easy access to weapons and ammunition.
